The country around Sydney & surrounds
Around Sydney the work sits on the edges: the Hawkesbury floodplain with its market gardens, poultry and turf production, the Bilpin orchards, acreage on the Blue Mountains fringe, and holdings backed onto national park and reserve. Almost none of it is remote, and all of it has neighbours.
The defining feature is that the surrounding bushland is a permanent reservoir. Deer, foxes and pigs live on land nobody controls and feed on land somebody owns, so the realistic objective is sustained pressure rather than a one-off clear-out.
What presses hardest here
Species pressure is not the same across New South Wales, and the control program should not be either. Around Sydney & surrounds the recurring problems are:
Feral deer across the peri-urban fringe, moving out of park and reserve onto pasture, plantings and gardens, damaging fences and creating road risk.
Foxes throughout, on poultry, small stock and native fauna, with abundant cover and no pressure.
Feral pigs in the Hawkesbury river country and the wetter gullies.
Rabbits on cleared and disturbed ground, particularly on acreage, and in turf and orchard country where the damage is to the product.
Wild dogs in the outer country. Greater Sydney Local Land Services' pest animal planning records reported wild dog attacks around the upper Hawkesbury and The Oaks and Oakdale, so a livestock loss out that way is worth describing properly rather than assuming a fox.
A thermal drone survey is what confirms which of these is actually driving the damage on your property, rather than which one you have seen most recently.
How the country changes the job
This is the most constrained country we work. Public access, dwellings, roads, sightlines and neighbouring holdings all have to be resolved before a method is chosen, and the answer is frequently trapping or suppressed night work under our Prohibited Weapons Permit rather than conventional shooting. River flats can be soft and slow after rain.
What a program looks like
Site assessment, then thermal mapping to locate and validate what is present, then the control operation itself using ground shooting, trapping and baiting or both, and finally post-operation reporting with GIS-ready outputs and chain-of-custody documentation.
What it costs depends on the property, not the postcode, and the site assessment is what turns it into a firm number. If you are a council, Landcare group or agribusiness, see feral animal control contracts.
